Guests staying at the Hilton chain of hotels will soon be able to select their own rooms and see the location of the room – on their smartphones.

As part of a $585 million investment into new smartphone technology, guests staying at the Hilton will also be able to gain access to the room itself.

By the end of the year, Hilton says it will offer digital check-in and room selection at 11 of its brands, across more 4,000 properties. The service will be available to Hilton Honors members in more than 80 countries.

The initial role out is scheduled for the brand in the USA, but it hopes that smartphones as keys will be fully available in most of the hotels in the world by 2016.

Other large hotel chains, including Marriott International and InterContinental Hotels, are also believed to be launching the new technology in the near future, with the Marriott group already offering a check in and out of service through smartphones in some countries.
