Royal Mail is also planning to pilot Sunday afternoon opening at around 100 of its delivery offices across the UK to make it easier for shoppers not at home during the day to get their parcels.

Chief Executive Moya Greene said: “Through these new Sunday services we are exploring ways to improve our flexibility and provide more options for people to receive items they have ordered online.”

Royal Mail’s express delivery service, Parcelforce Worldwide, will also offer a Sunday service to participating online retailers from June.

Other plans announced by Royal Mail include opening its distribution network later on Saturdays and Sundays. The new service enables larger e-retailers to hand items ordered by shoppers on a Saturday afternoon and Sunday to Royal Mail for delivery on a Monday.
