Curtain closes on spectacular Isle of Wight Festival
By Jamie White – Head of Communications
American rockers Kings of Leon brought the Isle of Wight Festival to a spectacular close, playing a mix of new material and some classic hits.
The group rocked the main stage and had fans singing along to Use Somebody, Supersoaker and The Bucket, before Sex on Fire brought the act to a close and signalled the start of the grand fireworks finale.
Before Kings of Leon, punk-rockers Fall Out Boy set pulses racing, while 90s Britpop icons Suede reminded revellers of some of their classic tunes, including Trash and Beautiful Ones.
Over in the Big Top, Travis played a hugely impressive set to the delight of fans, which included Sing, Driftwood and Turn, with lead singer Fran Healy diving into the crowd at one point to join in the fun.
The annual event – which has won Best Major UK Festival – attracted thousands of revellers from across the country and beyond to Seaclose Park, who witnessed a host of top performances from music icons – old and new.
On Saturday night, festival-goers were treated to a storming show by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers – their first UK festival performance since 2007 – playing an array hits, including Californication and Give it Away, from their hit collection which spans three decades.
A stunning laser light-show accompanied an ear-thumping DJ set from Calvin Harris on the Main Stage on Friday night, after Scottish band Biffy Clyro and Rudimental before them, warmed the crowd up. Over in the Big Top, Katy B had fans jumping to her hits which included Crying for No Reason and On a Mission.
Elsewhere, the festival enjoyed performances from John Newman, The Pretty Reckless, Ella Eyre, Cher Lloyd, Gorgon City, Clean Bandit, Passenger and The 1975, while a Sunday afternoon fly-over by the Red Arrows added to the excitement of the weekend.
The festival also gave local talent the opportunity to perform and showcase their talents, across some of the 20 stages on site.
