The 2014 Formula 1 World Championship will go to the wire after Nico Rosberg won yesterday’s Brazilian Grand Prix ahead of team-mate – and rival – Lewis Hamilton.

Rosberg completed his dominance of the weekend at Interlagos with a vital victory to close the gap to Hamilton to 17 points, with the Brit driver having to settle for the runner-up spot.

It means the championship will be decided in Abu Dhabi in two weeks’ time, with 50 points available through the double points scoring system.

Hamilton can win the title by finishing second to Rosberg in Abu Dhabi. But if he finishes third or lower and Rosberg wins the race, then the German will be champion.

Hamilton fought back to close a seven-second margin in Brazil after spinning out on lap 28 in a bid to catch his Mercedes team-mate.

Hamilton was closing on Rosberg, pushing his car to the limit, but caught his tyre on the white line and ran wide into the run off area, spinning in the process.

Rosberg managed to hold onto his lead to end Hamilton’s five-race winning streak and set up a dramatic final round in Abu Dhabi.

The Mercedes one-two means the team now has 651 Constructors’ Championship points – the most ever scored in a single season – surpassing the total set by Red Bull in 2011 with one race remaining.

Williams driver, Felipe Massa, took third place on the podium, followed by McLaren’s Jenson Button and Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel.
