Today is Pancake Day, where Brits will be putting their pancake tossing skills to the test in a bid to create the perfect pancake.

It’s the one day in the year you can eat pancakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner without people looking at you funny. Whether it’s jam, sugar, nutella, strawberries, ice cream, syrup or lemon – there’s a flavour to suit everyone.

Did you know, Pancake Day is commonly referred to as Shrove Tuesday Shrove and falls exactly 47 days before Easter Sunday. The expression Shrove Tuesday comes from the word shrive, meaning confess.

Pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent.

And if you’re wondering how to make the perfect pancake, here’s how:

Ingredients to make 10-12 pancakes:

  • 100g plain flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 300ml milk
  • 1tbsp melted butter

Making pancakes:

  • Sieve the flour into a large mixing bowl and with a spoon
  • Break the eggs and whisk slowly using a whisk, mixing them with the flour
  • Gradually add the milk until you have a light batter
  • Heat a little butter in your frying pan over a hot heat, and add 2 tablespoons of melted butter to the batter and stir
  • Add a ladle full of the batter to the hot pan and move from side to side until it evenly covers the surface of the pan
  • Reduce the heat and cook for about a minute each side, or until the batter begins to take a nice golden colour
  • Eat while still warm
