The top UK brand – which finished ahead of 1,500 others – was British Airways, which beat giants Rolex, Coca Cola, BBC and Heinz to the top spot.

British Airways impressed industry experts and consumers for its ‘consistently strong performance’ and is the first travel company to top the list.

The Superbrands panel also put BA’s success down to residual goodwill from its association with the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

One surprise is Apple – a former number one – dropping from second to 14th place.

The Consumer Superbrands ranking is based on a survey of 3,000 adults, including leading industry experts and marketing professionals.

Superbrands Chairman Stephen Cheliotis said: “British Airways has always performed well in the survey but over the last two years its reputation has climbed to new heights, partly through the cementing of its successful ‘To Fly, To Serve’ positioning.”

Google slid for the second year running, from sixth to seventh, while Facebook, which was 14th last year fell out of the top 20.

Boots entered the top 20 for the first time in 15th place, along with Amazon in 13th spot, while automotive manufacturer Mercedes-Benz claimed 20th position.

However, in the Business Superbrands 2014, list which runs concurrently with the Consumer survey, Visa claimed top spot, followed by Google, Apple, Mastercard and British Airways.
