Honda UK survey reveals UK’s greatest sporting achievements

The 1966 FIFA World Cup win over Germany is still considered the greatest British sporting triumph in history according to the results of a new poll by Honda UK.
The victory came out ahead of Andy Murray’s Wimbledon win last year, the first for a British player since 1936, while Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean’s Bolero in the 1984 Olympics which saw them take gold, made it into third position.
The survey, commissioned by Douglas Stafford clients, Honda UK, asked over 2,000 UK respondents what they considered to be the best British sporting triumphs of all time.
The survey also asked people to vote for the ultimate unbeatable male and female sporting stars of our time, with Muhammad Ali former professional heavyweight boxer, and Martina Navratilova, former World No. 1 Tennis player, taking poll position.
Usain Bolt, the fastest man on earth, came in at second place with 20 per cent of the vote, while football legend Pele was third.
Among the top ten male stars also recognised in the poll, were five times Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave, triple World Champion Formula 1 racing driver Ayrton Senna, double Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah and former professional footballer George Best.
Former tennis star Martina Navratilova topped the list as the ultimate unbeatable female sporting star, followed by Olympian Jessica Ennis-Hill and tennis champion Serena Williams.
Jane Torvill just missed the top three spot being placed fourth, closely followed by gymnast Olga Korbut, tennis player Steffi Graff, sailor Dame Ellen MacArthur and athlete Dame Kelly Holmes.
