The acquisition takes the total number of franchised dealerships in the Marshall portfolio to 70. Under the terms of the agreement, all 324 colleagues at the sites have transferred to Marshall, taking the headcount at Marshall to around 2,300. The combined group’s turnover for 2012 is £927m with Silver Street accounting for £115m.

In a statement, Daksh Gupta, Chief Executive at Marshall, said: “This is a significant acquisition for Marshall which sees us continuing our strategy to become a national dealer group.”

“Since 2009, our underlying turnover has grown from £250m to a run rate that is rapidly approaching a billion. Seventy per cent of our portfolio is new and we have welcomed around 1,500 new colleagues to Marshall. All of our acquisitions have been funded by our own cash flows and have involved no debt. Our plan is to continue to grow the business through acquisition, but a key focus for us now is optimising the group’s performance.”

“This performance optimisation strategy is to benefit all our key stakeholders; our customers, people, brand partners and shareholders.”

New TomTom Rider device for bikers

TomTom launches new TomTom Rider device

By Jamie White – Head of Communications

TomTom has launched TomTom Rider – a portable navigation system created especially for bikers.

The idea for the Rider came about after TomTom received feedback from the motorcycling community about the type of device they would find useful.

The TomTom Rider is now designed to give bikers the ability to choose the type of route they want to ride – from the fastest, to the most scenic, to their own personalised route.

Bikers can easily create and then upload their personalised routes direct to their TomTom Rider device.  By downloading Tyre interactive software, bikers can search, create and edit their own routes on a PC, or alternatively, a unique Upload Routes and Go feature enables bikers to upload routes directly to their device and share them with other bikers via Bluetooth.

In addition, TomTom Rider includes a feature that feeds audio instructions directly to the user’s helmet via Bluetooth, meaning riders can fully concentrate on the road ahead.

The device includes the introduction of a new 4.3-inch glove-friendly screen, which responds instantly to touch and is designed for riding in any weather conditions.

The device also comes with a new charging bike dock that turns it on or off with the ignition of the bike.

More information is available at www.tomtom.com/rider

Apprenticeship schemes becoming available at BMW

By Jamie White – Head of Communications

The BMW Group is launching a series of apprenticeship schemes aimed at young people who are interested in a career in the motor industry.

Throughout 2013, BMW wants to pair up 150 people with the schemes that are available through its company and dealerships in 2013.

The new recruits will join nearly 400 existing apprentices currently undergoing training across the company’s UK operations, and within its BMW and MINI dealer network.

The business is looking for 45 new apprentices to take up places at its MINI UK production plants in August as they prepare for the next model generation. In addition, BMW and MINI dealerships are looking to recruit around 100 young people across the UK.

Skills Minister, Matthew Hancock, said: “It is great news that BMW are offering so many more exciting apprenticeships.

“Apprenticeships are the best way for young people to get the skills both they and their employer needs, while earning a salary, and this scheme demonstrates really well the opportunities that are out there.”

MINI Plant Oxford has 32 places available and technical apprentices will attend Plant Oxford’s newly opened training school. Business and IT apprentices will attend Abingdon and Witney College in conjunction with Oxford Brookes University.

With five apprenticeships available at the Plant Swindon pressings plant and a further eight at the Hams Hall engine plant near Birmingham, apprenticeships last between three and four years and cover a wide range of skills

For the 100 apprentices to be recruited to MINI and BMW dealerships, there are programmes in various disciplines ranging from Service Technician, Parts Advisor, Motorcycle Technician and Body Refinish/Paint.

Young people can apply for an apprenticeship through a new Facebook page, which can be found at www.facebook.com/BmwCareersUK. The closing date for applications is March 1.
