Lewis Hamilton has opened up a 24-point lead at the top of the Formula 1 World Championship standings after claiming victory in the US Grand Prix.
Hamilton raced to victory around the Austin circuit to claim his 32nd F1 victory, overtaking Nigel Mansell’s total to set a new British record.
The win puts Hamilton as the firm favourite to win this year’s championship, ahead of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.
Throughout the practice sessions, Hamilton looked strong, but was pipped to pole by Rosberg after suffering problems with his brakes.
But the Brit remained calm and composed during the race and overtook Rosberg with a brave move at Turn 12.
The win provided even more delight for Mercedes after winning the Constructors Championship last month in Russia.
Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo drove superbly to claim third spot and a place on the podium.
There are 75 points available in the final two races in Brazil and Abu Dhabi, meaning Hamilton could win the championship by finishing second to Rosberg in both races – but Hamilton is determined to win both and clinch the championship in style.
