The Brit passed Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, who was forced to retire, to claim his 27th career win – six years to the day after his last success on home soil.

And Rosberg’s retirement means Hamilton has now closed to the gap on his rival to just four points at the top of the Drivers’ Championship.

There was drama at the start of the race when it was delayed for nearly an hour for barriers to be repaired following a high-speed crash involving Kimi Raikkonen.

As Hamilton – who started sixth on the grid – roared across the finish line, he exclaimed through his team’s radio: “England!” before spinning donuts to the delight of the 125,000 strong home crowd.

Valtteri Bottas was second in his Williams, with Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo in third place.

The Australian held off a charge from Brit Jenson Button in the closing laps, as Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel won a thrilling battle with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso for fifth place.
