On Friday (September 27) ten team members headed to Brighton for the ceremony, where Douglas Stafford were shortlisted for the Team of the Year Award.

The event was held at the prestigious Grand Hotel, with around 300 people in attendance, including sponsors and nominees for the awards.

Our category saw two categories merged – Team of the Year/Employee of the Year – and was hotly contested, featuring six other people and businesses from across Hampshire, Surrey, West Sussex and East Sussex.

TV star Fred Dinenage presented the awards, and said: “I love these awards this event in particular, because this is the creme de la creme, this is the battle of the giants. I greatly admire all of the companies involved, who are going from strength to strength.”

The deserved winner of our category was Furniture Now. The crowd was told the story behind the business, which buys furniture and sells them to people who can barely afford to buy any and struggle to get by. The founder employs people with learning and social difficulties to promote social inclusion, and also teaches IT skills, furniture skills and other back to work skills. The charitable business has grown hugely and he now has several other stores across the south.

Douglas Stafford also sponsored the Large Business of the Year Award, which meant the company logo was on the big screen all night and featured prominently in the events programme. Winner of Large Business of the Year was Oceanair Marine Ltd – designers and creators of marine blinds and shades which are distributed to clients around the world. Douglas Stafford Operations Director, Ben Sargeant, went on stage and presented the award to a representative from the company.

There was also some extra satisfaction to take from the night for the Douglas Stafford team. The Customer Service Award was won by clients of ours, Lookers Mercedes-Benz of Eastbourne, re-iterating how mystery shopping with Douglas Stafford can significantly improve customer service.

Ben said: “Sadly, we couldn’t take all of our team on the night, but we would have loved to. To be named amongst the best businesses in the south is a huge credit to all our hardworking team. Credit goes to all the Douglas Stafford team who have played their part in the company’s continued success. Everybody should be very proud of their achievements.”

Record-breaking Silverstone success for Jason Plato

Silverstone success for Jason Plato at the BTCC

By Jamie White – Head of Communications

Jason Plato continued his record-breaking run of success in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) by pushing his career victory tally to 80 with a brace of triumphs at Silverstone.

Jason Plato roars to BTCC Silverstone success - Douglas Stafford Mystery Shoppnig

Plato led home team-mate Sam Tordoff in the opening race and then repeated the success in the second event in Northamptonshire, while Tordoff came home in fourth in race two. Fully loaded with success ballast in the finale, Plato banked yet more points with a seventh place result.

Tordoff was taken off the road by a rival in a controversial incident in race three that is the subject of an on-going sporting appeal.

The strong results meant that Plato was the highest points scorer across the three races and it has set him up for a final push for victories when the championship reaches its showdown at Brands Hatch on October 12/13.

Plato said: “Winning races is what is important now and that was my main focus at Silverstone. To reach 80 wins in the BTCC is satisfying personally, but what I am also pleased about is that we took our chances when they came.

“The car worked well and we really improved its handling in the faster corners. We have an outside chance for the championship and I am not going to pass up any opportunity that comes my way, but we are not daft. It is one heck of a long shot.

“I am going to Brands Hatch in two weeks’ time with one thing in my mind; there are people trying to win a championship but it is such a distant dream for me. All I can do is go there only to win. Then whatever happens will happen.”

Tordoff was encouraged by his start to the weekend as he lined up alongside Plato on the front row for the opening race, and was pleased to land his fourth career podium in his maiden BTCC season.

The Yorkshire driver lost out to some drivers on the quicker soft option Dunlop tyres in race two but still managed to battle home in fourth place.

Motorcycle manufacturer, BMW Motorrad, is celebrating after scooping five top accolades at the coveted MCN Awards.

BMW Motorrad celebrates award success - Douglas Stafford Mystery Shopping

The Motorcycle News (MCN) Awards honoured BMW Motorrad’s leading role as a manufacturer, for launching the best motorcycle of 2013 and for making the best adventure bike, sportsbike and scooter.

The prestigious awards included Manufacturer of the Year, MCN Bike of the Year – BMW R 1200 GS, Adventure Bike of the Year – BMW R 1200 GS, Sportsbike of the Year (unlimited capacity) – BMW HP4 and Scooter of the Year – BMW C 600 Sport.

BMW Motorrad General Manager, Adrian Roderick, said: “To have the Motorcycle News panel of judges praise the pioneering work of BMW Motorrad as ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ is welcome recognition of how far the BMW brand and model range has developed in recent years as we celebrate BMW Motorrad’s 90th anniversary in 2013.

“It is a real honour to have the R 1200 GS named both ‘Bike of the Year’ and ‘Adventure Bike of the Year’. Replacing a motorcycle as universally loved and successful as the air-cooled GS was a huge challenge. But the motorcycling public and the judges at MCN have recognised that the new GS is an even better motorcycle; one which, despite all the imitations and challengers, remains the benchmark for its class.”

The new models come 50 years after the first 911 appeared and will make their debut at the Auto Show in Los Angeles on November 20.

The Carens achieved high scores for Adult Occupant Protection (94 per cent), Child Occupant Protection (76 per cent), Safety Assist equipment (81 per cent) and Pedestrian protection (64 per cent).

The vehicle is also one of only two compact MPV models to earn five-stars in the 2013 Euro NCAP tests.

Standard safety equipment fitted to the new Kia Carens includes six airbags (front, front side and curtain), seatbelt reminders for all occupants, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), HAC (Hill-start Assist Control) to prevent roll-back and ESS (Emergency Stop Signalling) which flashes the brake lights to alert other motorists when the driver is making an emergency stop.

Benny Oeyen, Vice President Marketing and Product Planning, Kia Motors Europe, said: “In the last five years, Euro NCAP testing criteria has become tougher, making it harder for manufacturers’ products to be awarded top marks. It is a testament to Kia’s ongoing commitment to improving vehicle safety that we are able to once again achieve the highest rating with new Carens which has great appeal for families with an active lifestyle who seek both style and practicality.”

The Carens range starts from £17,895 and is available with three engines – 1.6 GDi engine with 133 bhp and a 1.7 CRDi engine with two states of play of 114bhp and 134bhp, with CO2 from 124g/km.

The new Kia Carens joins six other Kia models – cee’d, Rio, Venga, Soul, Sportage and Sorento – in scoring a five-star rating in Euro NCAP crash test results.

New collection service to be trialled by eBay and Argos

New service will allow shoppers to collect eBay items at Argos

By Hannah Cook

Shoppers who use eBay will soon be able to order retail goods online and collect them from their local Argos store.

The new service is set to be trialled before Christmas, and will allow eBay users to ‘click and collect’ from more than 150 Argos shops across Britain.

The online auction site hopes the service will help solve the problem of its customers waiting at home for parcels or having to pick them up after missing the postman.
Amazon, eBay’s biggest online rival, already has deals with newsagents across the UK, letting shoppers pick up packages in their own time.

It is believed that around 50 eBay’s top sellers will be able to offer the ‘click and collect’ service, for which there will be no extra charge.

It’s also been rumoured that if the six-month trial is successful, it could be expanded to all of Argos’s 735 UK stores. It is hoped the service will eventually become available to the millions of other eBay users who auction off all sorts of items.

More than 40 per cent of British shoppers used some form of click and collect in Christmas 2012, according to figures from research group Econsultancy.

Argos began its own collection service in 2000 which now accounts for around a third of its business. The company also hopes to benefit from the deal with eBay because it will increase the number of shoppers coming through its doors.

Cherished plates to go under the hammer

By Jamie White – Head of Communications

A personalised registration fit for a king or, to be precise, a Sultan, is set to go under the hammer this weekend.

Number plate fit for king - Douglas Stafford Mystery Shopping

On Saturday, (September 28) DVLA Personalised Registrations is auctioning SU11 TAN, arguably the closest within the Agency’s extensive archives to the noble title, during the final hours of its three-day autumn sale being held at Mercedes-Benz World in Weybridge, Surrey, from Thursday.

Jody Davies, DVLA Personalised Registrations’ Events Manager, said: “The huge amount of interest and eventual sum we achieved for 1 HRH in 2009 was staggering. As we have received considerable interest inSU11 TAN, it’s fair to say it is likely to sell when it goes under the hammer on Saturday but for what sum, who knows?”

Thanks to its distinctive royal connotations, DVLA Personalised Registrations successfully sold ‘1 HRH’ for £113,000 four years ago. While the agency is staying open minded as to what figure SU11 TAN – which has a £1,500 reserve – could sell for, it is confident of its success as interest, especially from overseas, is ‘considerable.’

DVLA Personalised Registrations’ forthcoming auction will consist of a total of 1,500 registrations, all chosen to offer a selection to suit all tastes, styles and budgets including:

222 A (reserve – £3,000), AB12 AHM (£900), AMY 848E (£400), AU13 REY (£950), A45 AMG (£900), BAC 80N (£400), BEA 777Y (£400), BR11 GGS (£1,000), CA12 OLS (£900), CH11 SEA (£900), CL63 AMG (£1,500), C44 MPA (£350), C111 LLA (£400), DOG 1X (£700), DRE 33M (£400), D111 ONS (£400), 850 E (£2,600), ELV 15V (£400), E110 BEN (£350), FA12 ROW (£900), FRU 17T (£900), GL63 AMG (£1,500), HES 84D (£350), H111 PPY (£400), 85 KEN (£1,900), LEO 1G (£700), LU11 ABY (£900), MA12 THA (£900), MCL 412C (£400), MEL 1B (£700), MUM 55Y (£400), PD51 NGH (£1,000), P11 PES (£400), RAJ 80Y (£400), RO13 ERT (£2,000), SLS 63 (£1,900), TOM 11M (£500), TUR 80N (£400), 1 USM (£2,900), 900 W (£2,800), WRX 70Y (£350), XKR 80Y (£400), X430 FER (£300).
